The Emerald Suites
14 suites for a Clifton boutique hotel. Each one a private room, not a number.
The brief
The client is a Karachi hotelier. Family-run, second property, first with a design brief. The site is a converted 1960s villa in Clifton. 14 suites, a lounge, a breakfast room.
The suites share one plan. Same bed wall, same bathroom, same window. Guests should never feel that. Each door should open onto something held. A house, not a hotel corridor.
The constraint was the calendar. 14 weeks from first drawing to first guest. Hotel pieces take harder wear than a home's. Every fabric was specified to contract grade.
The approach
We designed one suite, then varied it 14 ways. Walls in deep green plaster or oxblood. Bedheads in mohair velvet or leather. The bones stay constant. The mood does not.
Each suite holds a Meridian bed in walnut. A Noctis lounge chair sits at the window. The Meridian cocktail table carries tea and books. A Heritage mirror doubles the light. Noctis candleholders in blackened steel and brass finish the dressing table. Downstairs, a bronze-railed stair and a coffered lounge.
The workshop ran 2 lines in parallel. Beds in one, casework in the other. Pieces arrived by floor, over 3 nights. Housekeeping trained on the finishes before opening. The first guest arrived in week 14.
